INTERDISCIPLINARY, BILINGUAL CURRICULUM

Stance Dual School has 36 years of experience in bilingual education, valuing the Portuguese language and Brazilian cultural and history in equilibrium with the English language, global cultures and the commonly shared history of humanity, which can be summarized as: “Local Roots, Global Wings”.

Every subjects’ curriculum is organized in terms of content taught in English and other content taught in Portuguese, as well as connections amongst multiple subjects in interdisciplinary, bilingual projects.  In practice, this means that while a student is learning about the digestive system in science classes in Portuguese, he/she is learning about nutrition and the food guide pyramid in science classes in English.  And beyond this, these contents are part of an interdisciplinary, bilingual project that involves planning a menu for the school cafeteria utilizing curricular genres from English and Portuguese language classes (recipe, menu, shopping list, etc.), as well as mathematical concepts, such as measurements and calculations in math classes in English and Portuguese.

Students learn curricular contents from various disciplines in a holistic and integrated way, starting from real life situations.  In this process, they go between at least two languages, while some projects involve Spanish as well (starting in Year 2).  Interdisciplinary, bilingual projects afford the encounter of multiple cultures and their perspectives, constructing a repertoire for students to deal with differences in the real world and the unpredictable future.

Beyond this, as a complement to our pedagogic project, our school offers field research experiences nationally and internationally, such as pedagogic trips to diverse places in and around Sao Paulo, as well as our International Program to Canada  and our International Program to Argentina.

Our students also take international exams to certify their level of Spanish (DELE) and English (FCE and CAE), according to the  Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), many continuing their language studies in international high schools or high school abroad.
