SOCIAL-ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOOL
Since 1999, UNESCO’S Peace Committee has developed permanent activities to inspire and stimulate initiatives that contribute to the construction of a fair, compassionate, sustainable and equal world to all those who live in it.
Our school, inspired by these believes that the Environmental Education is a tool to change. The exercise of coexistence among human beings, respect towards differences, the valorization of dialogue and a sustainable posture towards natural resources are the focus of our work, drawing upon the principles in the Earth Charter and the Agenda 21.
There are several activities at school that promote social-environmental responsibility. Here are just a few:
1. School-wide Events: Every year we commemorate World Environmental Day and World Water Day with important activities throughout the school, including lectures and special activities for the school community.
2. Gardening Classes: Preschoolers and Year 1 students have regular gardening classes, in a farm to table approach.
3. Environmental Education Classes: Along the year, elementary school students have environmental education classes, entitled “Friends of the Planet”, forced on the following themes:
Year 2: Responsible Ownership, respect towards animals.
Year 3: Education for Peace: promoting changes.
Year 4: Dialogue: a transformation source.
Year 5: Valuing natural resources.
4. 3Rs and Composting: Students are involved in the daily process of throwing their waste into the proper bin for composting, recycling or trash, as well as learning about the 3Rs and composting in interdisciplinary curricular projects.
5. Preservation of Green Spaces: Our school takes great care to preserve all the green space that we have, making our school an oasis in an urban center, preparing students to take responsibility towards the world around them.
